Before joining SERA in April of 2011, Dr. Larzo was the director of vitreoretinal service and fellowship and assistant professor of vitreoretinal surgery at West Virginia University Eye Institute. He also served as a consultant to the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Clarksburg, WV.
While at WVU Hospitals he also was a member of the Ambulatory Care Committee of the Physician Office Center. Previously he was resident director of the WVU Eye Institute’s Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment and Basic Science Review Program.
Gene therapy for childhood blindness, funded by the Research to Prevent Blindness Foundation and theLions Eye Bank, was one of Dr. Larzo’s research interests during his time at WVU.
He held a residency at the West Virginia University Department of Ophthalmology, WVU Eye Institute in Morgantown; he served as intern in the Pediatrics and Internal Medicine departments at Ruby Memorial Hospital, WVU Hospitals, also in Morgantown.
As a resident, he won two first place research awards chosen from among his peers.
Dr. Larzo earned his doctor of medicine degree in 2001 from WVU School of Medicine. In 1995, he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from WVU’s Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. He was a biology major and was enrolled in the University Scholar’s Program and selected for the University Honors program as well. He was also awarded the John L Lewis Dr. and Mrs. Hugh Carr Scholarships.
He and his wife, a pediatrician, have three children. They enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming and fishing. They attend Grace Fellowship Church in Johnson City and enjoy serving local ministries such as Rise Up!, The Well and Young Life.
